Historical Background
Ecole Secondaire de Gikonko(ESGikonko) started on January 17th, 1994 by
Reverend Nahayo David.
During the first months, the school was using the buildings offices of local government former Mugusa . After 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, the school used buildings of the current Gikonko TVET.
From 1998 to 2006, the school owner(EAR/Butare Diocese) managed to build 12 classrooms, 2 rooms used as smart classrooms, multipurpose hall, different staff offices, and dormitories with connected facilities. As a government aided school, the government has provided support in one way or another.
From 1994 to 2003, the school offered ordinary level schooling.
In 2004 the school started advanced level program ‘ Section Lettres’ which later became English-Kiswahili-Kinyarwanda combination(EKK) which is today
Literature-Kiswahili-Kinyarwanda(LKK). In 2012 the school opened
MCE (Mathematics- Computer Science -Economics) combination.
Currenly, ESGikonko has ordinary level and two combinations
MCE and
LKK. The school is headed by
Reverend Jean Baptiste HAVUGIMANA
School Population
The school population in 2020-2021 academic year is 324 students. There are 16 teachers and 6 administrative staff. There are also 16 supportting staff, including entertainer, librarian, store manager, cooks, security guards and cleaners.

The school land is 41347 sqm with around 3000 trees in it.
Ecole Secondaire de Gikonko is located in South Province, Gisagara District, Gikonko Sector near around Gikonko Rice Factory and Gikonko Health Center.
